Roof, gutters and downpipes first. Fix what is letting water in before dealing with the damage it has caused.

Frequently asked questions

Most changes to a listed building need consent, including work inside and repointing in a different mortar. Doing the work without it is a criminal offence, so it is worth getting right. We advise on what is needed and can prepare the application.

Old buildings have no damp proof course, so they cope with moisture by letting it dry out through the walls. Lime mortar and plaster are soft and porous, so damp escapes. Modern cement seals it in, and the damp then comes out through the brick or stone instead, breaking it up.
